Help & Support
Everything you need to use PassagePro, the free navigation toolkit for watchkeepers from JPAM Studio.
What It Covers
- Voyage: voyage plans waypoint by waypoint on a Mercator chart, course and distance by rhumb line or great circle, traverse and dead reckoning, and noon reports.
- Celestial: an almanac for the Sun, Moon, planets and 57 navigational stars, sight reduction and the fix, latitude sights, a star finder, sunrise and twilight, and compass error.
- Tides: tide height and under-keel clearance from the tide table’s high and low waters, and tidal streams.
- Misc: ETA and speed, Moon phases and conversions.
- Bowditch: calculation tables, worked examples and methods with their references.
- Rules of the Road, IALA Buoyage and ECDIS Symbols: the rules, lights, shapes and sound signals, encounters and CPA, buoyage marks and light characters, ECDIS symbols and safety settings, each with practice.
- Manuals, Mariner’s Handbook, Ships’ Routeing and Ocean Passages: key points in PassagePro’s own words, with links to the equipment makers’ own manuals.
Getting Around
On a big screen, choose a module in the rail on the left, then a tool from the tabs above. On a phone, the modules run along the top: swipe them sideways. Each tool opens with a worked sample, such as a Manila to Singapore passage. Change the figures and the results update at once.
Your Routes and Settings
Routes, waypoints, sights and settings are saved in your browser on this device. Clearing your browser’s data, using a private window, or switching to another device starts fresh.
The Intro
A short intro plays each time you open PassagePro. Tap it, press Escape, or select Skip intro to go straight to the app. Select the PassagePro logo at the top to watch it again.
Accuracy
PassagePro’s methods follow Bowditch, The American Practical Navigator (NGA Pub. 9). The almanac is computed on your device: the Sun, Moon and stars agree with the Nautical Almanac to about 0.1′, but planet positions are approximate, so take planet sights from the Nautical Almanac. PassagePro is a calculation and study aid, not for navigation. Always cross-check with the Nautical Almanac, official tide tables, official charts and publications, and your ECDIS.
Offline Use
After your first visit, PassagePro keeps a copy of itself in your browser and works without an internet connection. On a phone, add it to your home screen from your browser’s Share or Menu option and open it like an app.
