Help & Support
Everything you need to explore, search and find your way with JPAM Maps, the free 3D map from JPAM Studio.
What It Does
JPAM Maps is a free map of the whole world that runs in your browser. It shows streets, places and 3D buildings from OpenStreetMap, satellite imagery, mountains and valleys in 3D, and a globe with day and night. You can search for places and addresses, see what is nearby, read about a place, and get driving, walking and cycling directions with turn-by-turn guidance. No account is needed.
Moving Around the Map
- Move and zoom: drag the map, and scroll or pinch to zoom. The + and − buttons on the right zoom too.
- Tilt and rotate: right-drag, or hold Ctrl and drag, on a computer. On a touch screen, drag two fingers up or down to tilt, and twist them to rotate. The 3D button tilts the map for you, and the compass turns it back to north. Buildings rise in 3D whenever the map is tilted.
- The whole Earth: the globe button zooms out to the satellite globe. Select it again to zoom back in.
- On a phone, the panel sits at the bottom of the screen. Drag its handle up or down, or tap the handle, to see more or less of it.
Search
- Type a place, an address or a city in the search box, then choose a suggestion or press Enter for a list of results. On a keyboard, press / to jump to the search box.
- Under Explore this area, choose a category such as Restaurants, Coffee, Gas or Pharmacies to see those places on the map you are looking at. Use Open now to show only places that are open, and Search this area after you move the map.
- Search suggestions favour places near the middle of the map. Category results are sorted by distance from you if you have shared your location, or from the middle of the map.
Places
- Select a place name on the map, a search result or a marker to open its card. Cards show the address and coordinates and, where OpenStreetMap has them, opening hours, phone number, website and more. Many places also show a summary and photo from Wikipedia, and the local weather and time.
- From a card you can get Directions, Save the place to a list, Share a link to it, Copy its address, or set it as your Home or Work.
- Reviews & photos and Street View open the place on Google Maps, because no free open service provides them.
- Drop a pin: long-press the map on a touch screen to open a card for that spot. On a computer, right-click the map for What’s here?, directions to or from that point, Measure distance and Copy coordinates.
Directions
- Select Directions on a place card, then choose your starting point. My location uses where you are, once you allow it.
- Choose Drive, Walk or Cycle to compare travel times, then select a route to see its steps. For Transit, JPAM Maps opens the trip in Google Maps or Apple Maps, because free open data has no worldwide timetables.
- Travel times are estimates from the road network and do not include live traffic.
Turn-by-Turn Guidance
- Select Start driving, Start walking or Start cycling. When you start from your current location, the map follows your position and reroutes you if you leave the route.
- If you start somewhere else, or your location is off, the trip is played as a simulation so you can preview it. Select the simulation button to change its speed.
- Spoken directions use your device’s voice. Use Voice on or Muted to switch them, Overview to see the whole route, Re-center to follow your position again, and End to stop.
- Share ETA creates a short message with your arrival time that you can send to someone.
Stay Safe on the Road
- Set your route before you start driving, and keep your eyes on the road. If you need to change something, stop somewhere safe first.
- Always follow road signs, traffic laws and the conditions around you. Map data, routes and opening hours can be incomplete, out of date or wrong.
- JPAM Maps is not meant for emergencies, or for marine or aviation navigation.
Your Location
JPAM Maps opens on your location. Your browser asks for permission the first time; if you say no, the map opens on the globe instead, and you can select Near me or the location button whenever you like. If you said no before and want to use your location, allow location for jpam.studio in your browser’s site settings (on an iPhone or iPad, also check Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services for your browser), then reload the page.
Map Styles and Layers
Select the layers button to choose Explore, Satellite or Terrain, and to switch 3D buildings, 3D terrain, the globe at low zoom, day and night shading, and, on satellite, labels and roads. You can also switch between kilometers and miles, and measure distances.
Whole Earth on the home screen, like the globe button, zooms out to the satellite globe, with the night side of the Earth shaded.
The weather button at the top right shows the temperature and air quality at the middle of the map. Select it for the details.
Saved Places
Your Favorites and Want to go lists, any lists you create, your recent places, and your Home and Work are saved in your browser on this device. No account is required. Clearing your browser data, using a private browsing window, or using another device or browser starts fresh.
Light, Dark and Your Home Screen
JPAM Maps follows your device’s light or dark setting. On a phone, you can add it to your home screen from your browser’s Share or Menu option and open it like an app. It needs an internet connection to load the map.
Map Data and Corrections
The map is drawn from OpenStreetMap, made by volunteers around the world, and every service JPAM Maps uses is credited under About & credits in the app. The map’s own credits fold into the small i button in the corner of the map after a few seconds; select it to see them again. If a street, place or opening time is wrong, select Edit on OpenStreetMap on the place card, or report it at openstreetmap.org/fixthemap, so the fix reaches everyone.
