Privacy policy

Effective 25 October 2026. Applies to the Simoy Marine apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android, the web app, and this website.

Simoy Marine doesn't ask who you are. There are no accounts, ads or analytics, and I never receive or sell your information. To show forecasts, the app sends the coordinates of the places you look at, and any place name you search for, directly to the weather service Open-Meteo.

Who is responsible

Simoy Marine is made and published by Paul Allan Manacap, an independent developer ("I" and "me" in this policy). You can reach me at [email protected].

What leaves your device

Simoy Marine needs a weather forecast for each place you look at, so it asks Open-Meteo for one. These are the only things the app sends:

WhatWhenWhy
Coordinates of points on the map and of places you open, rounded to about 100 metresWhile you use the map or open a forecastTo get forecasts, marine data, tides and air quality for those points
Your current location, rounded the same wayOnly when you tap My location and allow location accessTo get the forecast for where you are
Text you type into searchWhen you search for a placeTo find matching places

Tide station times

When you look at a place's tides, Simoy Marine asks the Simoy Marine tide service, which I run on Cloudflare, for the times at the nearest tide station. It sends only that place's coordinates, rounded to about 5 kilometres. The service gets the times from Stormglass (Storm Glass AS) and keeps the answer for up to two days, so other people looking at the same area get it straight away. It doesn't record who asked. Cloudflare, which hosts the service, handles the connection as any web host does.

Like any internet request, these also carry your device's IP address and basic technical details, such as the type of app or browser making the request.

Open-Meteo is operated by OpenMeteo GmbH in Switzerland, which acts as an independent controller of the data it receives. Its policy says its server logs may contain IP addresses and coordinates, are used for maintenance and abuse prevention, and are deleted after 90 days. Read Open-Meteo's terms and privacy policy for details.

None of this is sent to me. I don't run any servers that receive data from the app.

What stays on your device

Your saved spots, passage plans, logbook entries, alert settings, units, preferences and the last place you viewed are stored only on your device, in the app's own storage. They are never uploaded. Deleting the app removes them. In the web app, clearing your browser's data for this site removes them.

Location

Location access is optional. Simoy Marine asks for it only when you tap My location, uses it only while the app is open, and never tracks your location in the background. You can turn location access off at any time in your device's settings. Everything else in Simoy Marine works without it.

What Simoy Marine doesn't do

This website

This website is a set of static pages with no cookies, analytics or third-party scripts. Its fonts are served from this site. The hosting provider records standard server logs, such as IP address, time, page requested and browser type, to deliver the site and keep it secure.

Children

Simoy Marine is suitable for all ages. It collects no personal information from anyone, including children.

Legal basis and where data goes

Sending coordinates and searches to the weather and tide services is necessary to give you the forecast you ask for (in EU and UK law, performance of the service you requested, and my legitimate interest in providing it). Open-Meteo is in Switzerland, Stormglass in Norway, and Cloudflare, which hosts the tide service and may handle requests anywhere in its global network, is in the United States under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework. Each protects the data it receives under its own policy.

Your choices and rights

Because I don't hold personal information about you, there is normally nothing for me to access, correct or delete. You control the data on your device and can delete it at any time, as described above. For data that Open-Meteo holds, contact Open-Meteo directly. Depending on where you live, data protection laws such as the GDPR, the UK GDPR, the Philippine Data Privacy Act of 2012 or California's privacy laws give you rights over your personal information, and you can complain to your local data protection authority (in the Philippines, the National Privacy Commission). If you have a question or a concern, email me at [email protected] and I'll reply as soon as I can.

Changes to this policy

If Simoy Marine starts handling information differently, I'll update this page and its effective date before the change takes effect. Significant changes will also be mentioned in the app's release notes.
